Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is a fearless leader. With a full tank of rocket fuel and an electrifying personality, there are many lessons musicians can follow from the self-proclaimed “Technoking of Tesla.”

Musk’s success has not been easy. Through his leadership, successes, failures, and optimism, we have learned that persistence and tenacity are key.

And here are five lessons that we musicians, can learn from Elon Musk:

PERSISTENCE:

The music industry is lagging far behind technology. Artists continually fight against the corporations that dictate their way of life.

These bouts of failure and reluctance are not handed to artists who cannot handle them. These small slivers of your career must be taken as a hard lesson and learned in order to move forward.

LEADERSHIP:

Music professionals are often responsible for their own careers. And the artist sometimes operates as their own career manager.

Knowing how to lead and work with other professionals within your career, such as career manager, marketing and communications team, cultural producers, is a difficult skill, but one that needs to be mastered.

INNOVATION:

Sensorium Galaxy is changing the way people interact with virtual entertainment, using technology that can take musicians and fans into otherworldly digital environments, for a completely new vision of events that can be in VR.

This kind of forward-looking, technological mindset is vital to the advancement of the music industry. Without it, artists are in a tight skirt, as not keeping up with this evolution causes fans to question why their favorite artists are not providing these new experiences.

ACTIVISM:

Artists who stand strong alongside issues they take to heart, become more respectable to fans. And this is one of the many reasons why activism is so important today.

HUMILITY:

As musicians’ careers grow and expand their market, humility becomes increasingly important. Taking feedback with an open mind and avoiding thinking you are always right will provide many more opportunities for your career.
